Life Design

For a long time I thought I was happy with my job, I was doing what I’d set to do in joining the Royal Marines. I worked with like-minded people, got paid to stay exceptionally fit, got fed four times a day and was provided with a roof over my head. The trade-off was that I was expected to do what I was told do whether I liked it or not and, some of the things I was asked to do I really didn’t like. However I was still happy living my dream.

Or so I thought.

After a serious injury I was medically discharged, so I lost my job, my home and my marriage fell apart. It was a confusing time in all honesty and with the work I was involved in after that it only made things worse, without me even realising it until much later.

Before I left the Royal Marines a friend of mine had gone through a relationship breakup and lost his home and his job in the process as well, another friend had attempted to kill himself and survived, fuck knows how as he shot himself in the head with a 9mm pistol. He is one fortunate individual!!

There were many other people I worked with who were all going through some sort of personal crisis at that time with much of it being around identity, none of them seemed to know who they were anymore, why they were doing what they were doing and absolutely no idea what to do instead. It makes for a huge amount of confusion, internal conflict, mood swings and general emotional turmoil which is not something people in that profession tend to do very well, not outwardly at least. They tend to keep it close to their chest and put up a facade of strength and invulnerability, while inside there’s a colossal tornado tearing everything to pieces.

I saw counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists courtesy of the military and they were some extremely nice people who did their very best to help me, yet nothing seemed to break through. Then one day I decided to start using self-hypnosis again. I had self-taught hypnosis as a kid after seeing the Amazing Kreskin on TV and read as many books on the subject as I could get my hands on. I had used self hypnosis to help me achieve a number of different goals in the Marines and in my personal life and for some reason it had been swept under the rug until that day.

It made a difference very quickly and I also realised early on that there was only so much I could achieve myself, so I searched for a hypnotherapist to help me along the way. The was the best thing I could have done and I soon began to slow down that tornado in my head, which gave me the clarity to see what was going on and what I needed to do. All the crap that was spinning around started to drop down and I began to get rid of the things I didn’t need, collect up the things I did need and was then able to identify what it was that I needed in order to move forwards.

At last I had clarity, I had clearly defined goals broken down into small steps and I could see exactly where I wanted to get to. The sense of relief was enormous as I had let go of the guilt, anxiety, regret, anger and pain resulting from PTSD that had been causing me so much internal conflict.

I went on to learn the therapeutic side of hypnosis as well as continue on with my psychological studies, NLP training and used them to help my clients make the same kinds of changes that I had achieved with the help of hypnotherapy.

However, being a human being, about 10 years later I fell into a similar rabbit hole and wandered through the weird and windy alley ways of my mind yet again. This time was different though. I recognised my triggers and my negative responses much more quickly and was able to use the things  I had learnt from the first time round to steer myself back on course so much faster.

This got me thinking, what if I could put this into a format where other people could learn the same skills and principles so that they can apply them in the right way for them. It’s pointless having this knowledge if I don’t share it with people who really need it and enable other people to take the wind out of their tornadoes, to gain the clarity they want and need and make sense of the carnage by getting rid of what they don’t need, organising the positives that they have and identifying what they do need.
